Donor's relative, Shuichi Shinkawa, worked for Hillcrest Lumber Company. 2019.004.004 references Timberland. Both companies logged in the Cowichan Valley so it is likely this photograph was taken somewhere in the Cowichan Valley.

There is Kanji writing on the photograph, it says, "Everyone at Timberland Camp in commemoration of farewell to Mr. Heikchi Nishimura September 8, Showa 3". Showa 3 (possibly 5) = 1928, refers to the third year of the reign of Emperor Hirohito (1926-1989).

A crowd of women and children who appear to be waiting in line. These are Japanese-Canadians who had been forcefully removed from their homes and sent to an internment camp in Slocan Valley. Some individuals interned here were from the Cowichan Valley, like Shuichi Shinkawa, who is the donor's grandfather(?).

Bunkhouses for the Popoff Internment Camp in Slocan Valley. The large bunkhouses were for work crews and later adapted for the elderly, bachelors, and single people. One became a school. Many of the individuals interned here came from the Cowichan Valley.
