Albert James McNeil and Earnest Vincent Munn founded McNeill&Munn (unicorporated?) which was owned/controlled by the Export Logging Company. Alberni Was from Machias, Washington, and was hired by Catrpillar as a sales/service rep for the BC Coast. He met Joe Kerrone, who was cat-logging at Nixon Creek (later Caycuse). Went into business with Bart Westbrook with a "cat and donkey" show (name?) working Cameron's claim at Mile 62 on the CNR (near Gerry Wellburn's mill). Albern founded the Bear River Logging Company in 1938, with the plan to acquire and log a significant stand of Western Red Cedar (Cw) south of Sayward, BC. On December 11, 1939 a landslide on Vancouver Island (SE of Sayward) caused a swell that flooded the operation and ruined the camp. Shortly therafter the Cw market declined and the company went bankrupt. After the misfortune, Albert acquired and rebuilt and old Caterpillar Sixty and went to business for himself clearing property and selling it to land dveleopers, or hiring out his bulldozing services. services. He cleared the first nine holes for the Cowichan Golf Club, worked on the major expansion for the Cowichan Lake Research Station, and cleared the area for the Cowichan Valley Trap & Skeet Club. McNeil Road is named after him, and used to be the driveway to his property. |
