Provenance |
Camp 3 was established in the 1920s. By 1929 there were close to 200 loggers working at the camp. It closed during the Great Depression and re-opened in 1934. It was taken over by Industrial Lumber Mills Co. with BC Forest Products later taking over operations in 1946. In 1985 the camp was razed. A "hooker" is the hook tender, who is in charge of the yarding crew and releasing chokers at the landing. A choker is the wire rope section with ferrules to attach logs to the yarding line. A choker setter is a member of a crew who attaches chokers around logs. Jim "Jock" Paton came to Canada from Scotland when he nineteen years old. He first began logging in Lake Cowichan in 1929 and then moved to Caycuse and later to Camp 3 (Nitinat). |
