Photograph is part of an album depicting the Young Men's Forestry Training Program from 1935 - 36. Photographs taken by the Department of Labour & Department of Lands. In 1933, The Depression resulted in widespread unemployement: 30% of Canada's labour force was out of work. To help combat this, the Young Men's Forestry Training Program (YMFTP) was created in 1935. The goal of this initiative was to train men aged 18 to 25 years to aid in forest development, protection and to provide them skills needed to work in the forestry industry. They did a variety of tasks: clear land, build and rebuilt roads and buildings, fell snags, develop parks, plant trees, ect. Funding was given to the BC Forest Service and the Cowichan Lake Research Station (established in 1929) was chosen as to become one of the camps for YMFTP. This brought new families into the Cowichan Valley and was of great value to the local economy and social community. |
