Provenance |
Rock Bay was the headquarters of the B.C. Mills Timber and Trading Company. They manufactured and sold prefabricated houses for a few years (from. 1904–1910). They made house kits that could be shipped to people provided they lived near a railway line. B.C. Mills prefab kits came with plain panels, panels with doors, and panels with windows. B.C. Mills also manufactured prefab school, church, and bank kits. They only lasted six years because their target market, new settlers looking to homestead in Canada, were "dirt poor" and couldn't afford their prefab homes. Rock Bay was also the site of a company town owned by Hastings Mill. In the early 1900s, Rock Bay had a population of over 500. By the 1920s, it had a general store, hotel, hospital and a population of over 1500. |
