Image: Group of loggers on log with yarder in background Caption: Cowichan Forestry Life CamptoCommunity.ca Text on back: On the west coast of Canada, Vancouver Island's Cowichan Valley shelters forests of magnificent, towering trees that once lured great camps of loggers and now support communities of forestry workers When most of us think about life of a Canadian logger, our imaginations fill with images of thick stocks drying over a stovepipe, stacks of pancakes dripping with syrup and days filled with hard work and sawdust out in the woods. If we look a little closer, we also find that loggers belonged to communities that interesting and sometimes suprising stories. This virtual exhibit brings to life the forest camps of the last century with images of loggers and communities including schoolhouses, holiday parades, Sikh temples and stone churches. You can view faces of dedicated loggers and mill crews from China, Japan, India and Scandinavia and explore how First Nations peoples were impacted by forestry. The site includes poetry, comics and artwork created by the men of the woods and allows you to go back in time to the last century and walk through a virtual logging camp. We invite you to visit the towering forests of Vancouver Island and the camps and communities that resided within them Vancouver Island Loggers. This image shows men from he Chemainus Division of the Victoria Lumber and Manufacturing Company standing in front of a steam donkey. The image was taken in 1910 |
