Provenance |
Part of a past exhibit. Balloon logging got its start in Sweden in 1951, although it didn't make its way to the West Coast of North America until the 1960s. Among the first B.C. companies to try the concept was Balloon Transport LTD, who started an operation near Hope, B.C. in 1967 (From: Logging & Sawmilling Journal, July/August 1994). The idea was that balloons would be able to transport logs and workers to and from otherwise hard to reach areas. Despite initial optimistic predictions, balloon logging was never widely adopted in British Columbia. The balloon was too difficult to rig, snow and wind had too much an effect on it and the speed winch was too expensive. |
