Provenance |
Part of the Skene Digital Collection. Mike Paton grew up on Cowichan Lake and worked as a logger all his life. When Camp 3 (Nitinat) closed in 1957 Mike moved to the Caycuse division and ran a log loader for many years. According to Mike Paton on Mosiac of Forestry Memories: When he was about eighteen years old he noticed that the section crew for the railroad (all Chinese) would be tasked with dumping gravel onto the track and had to shovel the gravel in between the railroad ties. This was described as "back-breaking" work. Wanting to help, Paton decided to take an old gravel truck he was driving and take into the shops and replaced its wheels with wheels from a speeder so that it could drive on the railroad tracks. This then helped the section crew spread the gravel much easier and faster. |
