Expo '70 was held in March 15 and September 13, 1970 in Osaka, Japan. Its theme was "Progress and Harmony for Mankind." One of the major pavilions featured was The Canadian pavilion, which in turn featured a BC pavilion. The logs pictured here were dubbed the "Osaka Logs" because they were used in the BC pavilion. From Toronto Star, March 19, 1969, about the BC pavilion that used the Osaka logs: "British columbia: With its huge vertical bark-covered logs soaring as high as 160 feet; the B.C. pavilion at Osaka's Expo 70 will be the tallest wood structure in the world. The logs symbolize British Columbia's claim to the tallest trees in the world; but the pavilion also will reflect British Columbia's rugged mountain; its rivers and its rich resources." MacMillan Bloedel Limited was a Canadian forestry company with headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1951 Bloedel, Stewart and Welch merged with H.R. MacMillan to form MacMillan Bloedel Limited. Bloedel, Stewart and Welch held many timber resources and MacMillan was the first truly integrated forestry company in British Columbia. The two companies had timber holdings side-by-side and there was a natural synergy from this merger. In 1959 Macmillan Bloedel merged with a third company, Powell River Limited. MacBlo was purchased by Weyerhaeuser in 1999. |
