Provenance |
No.1077 built in 1923 for logging work on Vancouver Island. It worked at Port Renfrew as Cathel & Sorenson No. 1, then later worked at Chemainus as Victoria Lumber and Manufacturing No. 7. It was eventually bought by MacMillan Bloedel, who then sold it to the BC government. After being sold to the BC government, The 1077 was re-built and was used to haul the Provincial Museum Train on Vancouver Island in the late 70's. The Victoria Lumber & Manufacturing Company (VL&M) was incorporated in 1889 by J.A. Humbird, a US lumberman and protégé of Frederick Weyerhaeuser. He purchased 100,000 acres (400 sq km) from the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway for $5 an acre, and a small sawmill in Chemainus. In 1893 VL&M built a new mill, which burnt in 1923 and was subsequently rebuilt in 1925. VL&M went into voluntarily receivership in 1944 and was purchased by the HR MacMillan Export Co. in 1949. MacMillan Bloedel Limited was a Canadian forestry company with headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1951 Bloedel, Stewart and Welch merged with H.R. MacMillan to form MacMillan Bloedel Limited. Bloedel, Stewart and Welch held many timber resources and MacMillan was the first truly integrated forestry company in British Columbia. The two companies had timber holdings side-by-side and there was a natural synergy from this merger. In 1959 Macmillan Bloedel merged with a third company, Powell River Limited. |
