Provenance |
Locomotive #2 was purchased in 1910 by the Shawnigan Lake Lumber Co. In 1924 she was sold to Channel Logging (Continental Tmbr.). In 1929, Channel Logging encroached on timber owned by Cameron Lumber, and the locomotive was held as collateral at Cameron’s camp, just off the CNR at Deerholme, 3 miles west of Duncan. When the Great Depression caused both operations to close in 1930, No.2 was abandoned in the wilderness until Duncan resident Granger Taylor found her. Granger Taylor found the locomotive, nicknamed "Old Two Spot", on Mile 62 of the CNR west of Duncan in 1969. After getting permission from the owners of the land, he built a one-half mile road to the locie and with two friends dug it out so it could be moved. It was restored in 1970 but did not run again until 1971. As for Shawnigan Lake Lumber Company: The Shawnigan Lake Lumber Company was established at the current Old Mill Park site in 1890. Shawnigan Lake Lumber operated a sawmill on the E&N Railway at Shawnigan Lake, between 1889 and 1943, when the company was acquired by H.R. MacMillan Export. There were 3 major fires at the mill. After the last fire in 1945 the mill was not replaced. |
