Provenance |
The Shawnigan Lake Lumber Company was established at the current Old Mill Park site in 1890. Shawnigan Lake Lumber operated a sawmill on the E&N Railway at Shawnigan Lake, between 1889 and 1943, when the company was acquired by H.R. MacMillan Export. There were 3 major fires at the mill. After the last fire in 1945 the mill was not replaced. The class A Climax, Old Betsy (also spelled Betsey), was one of the earliest steam locomotives for logging on Vancouver Island. The boiler and engine were imported from the United States, mounted on a platform with a water tank and equipped with steel concave driving wheels. She was purchased by Shawnigan Lake Lumber Company in 1902 from the Climax Manufacturing Co. |
