Ted Yankoski was a logger who worked at Copper Canyon after World War II. He was the brother of Frank Peter Yankoski. The Copper Canyon Camp was built c. 1944 by the Victoria Lumber & Manufacturing Company. HR MacMillan Export Company purchased Victoria Lumber & Manufacturing Company in 1946. At its peak in the late 1940's, there would be around 200 men working in the camp. The Copper Canyon railway was abandoned in 1955. Edward (Ted) Yankoski was born in June 1924, in Binscarth, Manitoba. His family moved to Russell in 1927. Ted was with the Canadian Scottish Regiment for the liberation of Europe during Operation Overload. He landed on Juno Beach on June 6, 1944. He also took part in the liberation of Holland. After WWII, he worked in the BC logging industry in Copper Canyon. Before he returned to his home in Russell, he was clearing the land for the Mount Brenton Golf Course Ted passed away in 2021, aged 96. |
